Tengku Amir was born on 12 December 1990 at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, as the third child and first son of the then Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Idris Shah. His mother, Cik Puan Nur Lisa Idris (born Lisa Davis), was born in the United States.[2] As such, he has half American ancestry. He has two elder paternal half-sisters, Tengku Zerafina and Tengku Zatashah. On 3 May 2002, aged 11, Tengku Amir was proclaimed Raja Muda of Selangor.[3] He was formally installed on 8 October 2016 at Istana Alam Shah, Klang.
